Breastfeeding Advice
If you’ve made the decision to breastfeed, one thing you’re going to learn very quickly is that you’re probably going to get a lot of breastfeeding advice everywhere. Some of it is helpful and requested, while other advice you get will be unsolicited. I had to remember this just last week. You see, my sister-in-law and brother are expecting their first baby, and I had to avoid overwhelming her with advice on nursing a baby. I want to do the same for you, so I want to give you some very basic breastfeeding advice that I gave my sister-in-law to get her off to a successful start in breastfeeding.
- Do your homework – Before your baby is born, it’s best to learn all you can about breastfeeding. Read books, watch videos, and have them available when your baby is born as you’re likely to have to use them as references several times over the first year. If your baby is already here, you can still learn more by doing extra reading. After all, breastfeeding is not a destination. It really is like a journey with expected and unexpected things that come up. Visit this link for my top book picks.
- Buy yourself a breastfeeding pillow. The once I recommend is: My Brest Friend Deluxe Pillow Light Blue
It will help support your baby’s weight, and properly align and position the baby for correct latching.
- Buy yourself at least two good nursing bras. Visit Get great deals on breastfeeding essentials at Nursing Mother Supplies! for nursing bras, nursing pads for inside your bra, and nipple creme.
- Do your research into the kind of breast pump that you will buy. You may want to wait until the baby is born to buy the pump, but I’d recommend that you determine what kind you want before your baby is born as you will not necessarily feel like running around looking for one once the baby arrives. Two good-quality pumps can be found at: Low prices on breastpump, nursing bras, baby carriers and more at Nursing Mother Supplies!
- Learn how to latch a baby correctly onto the breast by viewing someone do it. If necessary, you will find it helpful to view on a video. The one I suggest is: Nature’s Way: Video Guide to Breastfeeding

As I said before, you’re going to get lots of advice as you nurse your child. The breastfeeding advice I just gave you was to get you started on your journey of breastfeeding your baby. You will learn much more than this as you nurse your child, but this is the basics of what you need to do at the start.
