Breastfeeding Engorgement – Part 2

If you have not yet read Breastfeeding Engorgement – Part 1, you may want to do that first.  Last time, I gave some information on what engorgement is and gave you a few ideas on how you can deal with this uncomfortable feeling of fullness in your breasts.   Today, I want to give you a few more ideas on how you can deal with engorgement.Last time, I mentioned using cold compresses between feedings to handle some of the engorgement.  Another one of my favorite ways of dealing with engorgement was the use of cabbage leaves, which was something that my lactation consultant taught me.  You do this between feedings.  Separate the leaves on a head of cabbage, and wash them, and place them in the fridge so they get cold.  Apply them as compresses around your breast (inside your bra works well) leaving the nipple exposed.  When the cabbage begins wilting, you can change the cabbage leaves again (recommended that you can do this up to 3X between feedings).    Once again, though, you do not want to overuse cabbage leaves as it can result in some decrease in milk supply.

Eventually, if you decide it is time to wean your baby from the breast, you do not want to do it “cold turkey.”  I have known people who have done this, but it is not recommended as it is so uncomfortable plus it puts you at an increased risk of developing mastitis.  In another post, you will be able to learn further on how to wean your baby while reducing the chances of engorgement.

Breastfeeding engorgement is common, but it can be helped.  You do want to take it seriously though to prevent/lessen the chance of developing plugged ducts or a breast infection.  Hopefully, some of the ideas in this two-part series have given you some ideas on how to make it more comfortable to deal with.
