Womanly Art of Breastfeeding

There is a book called The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding: Seventh Revised Edition (La Leche League International Book).   When I first heard of this book, I have to admit that I really didn’t understand why it was named that.  But once I started breastfeeding my babies, it all made sense.

What you will learn, or already know, is that breastfeeding a baby is really an art.  Not all babies have the same dispositions, or personalities, and so each baby can be a bit different to nurse.  Some babies suck faster or harder, while others are lazier and fall asleep quickly while at the breast.

It’s like the art of dance.  In dancing as a couple, you have a partner.  You must trust your partner, and believe that he/she will come through in leading you appropriately.  You both need to learn the steps in order that you can be synchronized and work together as a team.  In the beginning, learning the steps can be forced and uncomfortable with lots of mistakes.  However, as you practice, the steps get easier and come more naturally and quickly.  In this way, breastfeeding is very much the same.

In The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding: Seventh Revised Edition (La Leche League International Book), it provides the most recent research along with personal stories of moms.  There is also information about breastfeeding positions and latch on, as well as information on herbs that can help you increase your milk supply.  This book comes with a lot of reviews, mostly good.  It is written by La Leche League, a pro-breastfeeding organization.   Click on the above link I have provided you to read the reviews.

So as you begin your journey of breastfeeding, remember this:  There is a womanly art of breastfeeding, and it is you and your baby that make it that art!  No one mom’s experience is exactly the same as another mom’s experience.  Nor is it exactly the same with your own babies!  Enjoy learning the art!
